ERIK SPIEKERMANN

So we all got to choose one of the selected typographers out of a hat, well i say hat... it was a box that holds the REALLY NICE pens... that happend to have a hole in the top!...

anyway thats neither here nore there.... I chose Erik Spiekermann!.... which im really glad about.. because i like his work!... nothing like mine... very slick.. uses/overuses helvetica... but uses it well!... and ive seen some documentaries with him featuring and hes a very funny man!... he is quite the character!

10th March

The Start of the 'big Kahuna'!!... apparently meant to be the most industry based unit.. and the one people get work from the most!.... so im pretty stoked about starting this!

We will basically be using a website with loads of broadcasts by famous typographers... transcribing what the say and making that into a piece of design work .. and eventually a book on in design.

very excited!

26th Feburary- LOOK MUM IM FAMOUS!...

My friend lisa from illustration over the road just txted me!......

whats that lisa?  you have not got the time to do a commission you would normally do for a termly London fanzine?... and they asked you to pass it on to the next appropriate illustrator?... and you asked me?!... oh how very nice of you... yeh i will gladly do that!

basically its a zine, tackling issues such as homelessness and making people ethically aware of stuff!.... its good....

i was asked to illustrate an article on sweat shops...

and it went a little bit something like this!

25th Feburary

Today we had group tutorials... and i used this to get some well needed feedback to drive my work to that finishing line!

looking at everyone elses.... i was panicking about my own work!.... but when am I not!!

I actually got some really pleasant feedback from supporting staff and from peers!...

They all said that they liked my animated style.... it really captured my usual style just animated!... which is good!... and also they gave me suggestions as to where i should go with the last half of the animation!

helpfull stuff!

4th Feburary

So We've been advised to pick our statistics on things we are pasionate.. or really interested about,

I have decided to use stats concerning beach pollution, as this is a big concern and interest of mine.

end.

28th January

things ive been looking at to get some sweet inspiration:

one of the animations called cowards is awesome!!... a voice over for my animation would be cool!

this ones a music vid by dutch artist Parra... big big influence!... and this clip is funny!... winner!

27th January

Todays the day we start screen based communication!!... hurahhh!!

I am very excited about this one!.... learning flash... a completely new program!...should be very worth while... as loads of websites are made mainly using old flash!

So we were given the brief... the rest of the day ive spent looking into other animators to give me inspirtation... not just flash

:)

CHRISTMAS AND RESEARCH TIME!...yay....

25th November

Spend more save less!...

overall a good day!.... lots of ideas being thrown around.

my group ended up sticking with this pastiche of a mastercard advert...

its a bit rough, but you get the idea!

18th November

New Unit time!!... pretty up for a brief on amnesty as i am aware of a few of there campaigns.... especially there fight for the fair trials for Guantanamo bay detainees..good stuff

lets get on it!

5th November

BOOK BINDING!

This was a really fun activity!.... im not much of a perfectionist but i must say i was taking great care to make these little hand made books!

We were taught how to bind books with sewing techniques as well as just folding the paper!... it was amazing how simple the techniques were .. yet so effective!

for those who cant be bothered to bind for yourself

blurb is a website where you can upload your own images and text... and create a book that will be professionally bound!

i prefer the more personal approach though... and will definately be using the skills i have learnt in future units!

4th November

Learnt  a bit of publishing software,, that goes by the name of Quark!...

Kit is a bit of a pro at this so she was taking us through the basic steps.. page layout... grids... text boxes..etc!

Has a nice and friendly interface which is good!... but would prefer to learn Indesign even though we need Quark also as some publishers still use it, Indesign will be so much easier as its part of the Adobe suite and the interface is a lot like that of the rest of the suite!

28th October

Photoshop tutorials= sweeettt!!.

Ive used a little bit of photoshop before, so i was refreshed and then went on to learn a great deal more!

clive is a wicked teacher... really made things easy to pick up ..

We had to create a Vogue front cover... that took about 15 mins.... ( people really get paid for doing that??!!! )

16th October

Yesterday we went to London to see a lecture by the legendary Karl Cooper, who re invented the art form of title sequences.

I used the time before his lecture to work on the way finder section of the brief.... i actually ended up getting really lost and frustrated which was quite beneficial to the way finder. so it all worked out ok!

9th October

Our first group mini- project of the year was today called type with tape!.... We worked in groups to create a type face using tape only! ambitiously.... my group went to the library to try and source ideas and sketch out a few typefaces each to see what we were all thinking. We decided on one typeface and as a group we manipulated it slightly to meet everyones wants!

We took Sally's quote about only being able to go as far as our creative boundary will let us quite literally!

Using the tape practically made a boundary! making our finished typeface quite an interactive piece with other students having to avoid it!

this was  really successfull as an icebreaker... and as a learning excersise!

8th October

today i travelled to Tavistock in Devon to use my time as constructively as i can. Im here as i have decided to focus my project on Tavistock rather than Poole. Living locally to Poole i feel I was at a disadvantage as interesting things that might leap out at people who had never been there before might just get overlooked by me as im so used to it, so Tavistock it is!
